Regenerative shock absorbers increasing a vehicle’s fuel-efficiency

A team of undergrads from MIT have developed a shock absorber for vehicles which can harness and generate electricity back into the vehicle. The team claims that the shock absorber can increase a vehicles fuel efficiency by 10 percent.

The prototype shock absorber forces fluid through a turbine attached to a generator to produce electricity which is then transferred to the vehicle for use. There is also an improvement in ride with an active electronic system thats controls and optimises the damping.

The prototype shocks has already sparked interest from the United States military and several truck manufacturers. If it all goes well we might see them in the cars we drive in the coming years.
